There are a lot of things we love about January: literacy events, mentoring groups starting back up, adopted classrooms to visit… and CHILL!
We’ve partnered with the CHILL Foundation a few seasons now and each and every year we are so impressed with the impact this organization has on the youth that participate. They lay out their program perfectly on their website:
“Our 6-week snowboard program runs two evenings a week from January-March. The entire program, including transportation, equipment, lessons and lift tickets, are provided at no cost to the youth involved. Program participants meet in Vancouver, and ride as a group to and from the mountain.
We use our time on the ride up to introduce the weekly themes through an activity, and reinforce the concept during our time on the mountain with instructors & mentors. This structure allows participants to make meaningful connections to the curriculum while experiencing the innate joy of snowboarding.”
Sounds like fun, right?! It is! Weekly themes vary and are always lessons that truly can be reinforced during the snowboarding adventures. For example, Perseverance is a theme early on in the program; new snowboarders are applying this one right away as they get up and try over and over again to gain new boarding skills as they descend their first mountain. These lessons really stick and the time is super fun and always leave an impression on our participants.
Today was our first trip back up the mountain with CHILL this season. We dropped off our six youth participants to that bus this afternoon, watched ‘em climb on, and now we can’t wait to hear how the trip went! From the looks of their selfie, we’re in for a good story.
Thank you so much to the CHILL Foundation for providing such amazing opportunities to the youth in Vancouver! We wouldn’t be hearing or sharing these stories without you!
