Prospere Mentoring Update

Hey everyone! We just wanted to take a minute to update you on our Prospere Mentoring Program. Last month was our first month of programming and we have visited 11 of our 12 schools so far! One of our favorite things about Prospere is how unique each group is and the growth that we get to see in the students throughout the year.

This year our mentors come from all over the community and each have their own unique background story. We have some mentors who were former PAL youth, some who work at banks and churches, and even a few small business owners! Having a diverse group of mentors allows us to build stronger relationships with our youth and ultimately leads to our Prospere groups feeling like a family by the end of the year.

During the first meeting of the year our youth were challenged to work together in small groups in order to build the tallest tower using only playing cards, mini marshmallows, and toothpicks… did we mention they only had 10 minutes to complete this task as well? This challenge introduced our youth to key concepts such a leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship and even resilience. After this intense competition our youth brainstormed a list of community agreements to ensure everyone feels safe and respected throughout the year.

Before we sent our youth back to class, we had them fill out a topic selection survey. This allowed the youth to take a lead role in deciding what topics we will discuss throughout the year. Some of the top picks (no pun intended) among our groups were Money 101, Mental Health, Bullying, and Leadership. We are so excited to see the connections between our youth, community mentors, and law enforcement grow throughout this year.
