Vancouver Police Department Literacy Events are one of a kind. If you have never had the privilege of attending one, I encourage you to do so. This past school year Vancouver Police Officers visited nine elementary schools in our community, giving away almost 1,000 books to 2nd and 3rd graders! This program is possible primarily because of the dedication of two incredible men of blue: Corporal Rey Reynolds and Officer Brian Schaffer.
Corporal Reynolds takes the lead for our events as the emcee. He gets the kids excited, shares with them his love of reading and also does a short presentation on gun safety. But the best part of Rey’s presentation is when he read Green Eggs & Ham. It becomes a fully active experience for the youth and he tops it off by having the kids give him a beat at the end so he can rap Dr. Seuss’ final words. Needless to say by the time Rey is done, the kids are excited; not only to read but to have met such a cool police officer.
Officer Schaffer is more a behind the scenes kind of guy. He recruits VPD officers to join him and Rey at these events. He ends up running logistics the day of, making sure officers park their vehicles in the right place and know how things will run. What’s even more incredible is that he often puts in all this work on his free time, his day-off. It must be something about the smiles on kids’ faces that keep him going!
Without these two awesome officers, PAL literacy events would not be the same. They both make the event memorable and truly allow us to live out our mission of bringing cops, kids, and community together. So thank you; both of you are amazing men and PAL is fortunate to have you supporting us and our community!
